He turned and looked out on the floor. It took him longer to find her because she was hidden behind the biker talking to her. He craned his neck, caught her smiling at the other man, and tensed.

Stalking across the floor, he shoved people out of his way and stepped between her and the Tarkio member.

"Man, you better step away," said the biker.

"Get lost." He grabbed Callie's upper arm and pulled her away.

"Wh…?" Callie stumbled beside him. "Who?"

He ignored her mumblings and pushed out the front door. Turning her to face him, he gazed up and down her body to make sure she was okay.

Callie's mouth opened and shut numerous times, and she blinked rapidly. "Kent?"

"Nice of you to recognize me," he said.

"I thought I'd never see you again." She planted her hands on his chest, but her body weaved side to side, trying to gain her balance.

He caught her other arm and held her steady in front of him. That's when he noticed the way her eyes remained unfocused on him.

"What the hell have you been doing?" He stroked her hair out of her eyes.

Gut punched, he remembered the excitement, the passion, the energy swirling around her the night she'd finally let loose and egged her ex-husband's truck. He'd walked away from her that night as if he'd gotten his first taste of the real Callie, and his addiction to her had started.

How many other men inside the clubhouse were standing in the same position he was, half in love, fantasizing about being with a woman who had no understanding that fire ran through her veins? How many other men wanted to be the one who helped her set herself on fire?

Harper reached out to lift the baby off of James, but just as her hand touched his back, James stirred. She froze. “Professor?” His voice was husky from sleep, low and gravelly, and Harper’s belly flipped, heat sliding from her stomach lower, between her legs. They were in his bedroom. One of them was in bed. And that voice. And the nickname. She could hardly be blamed for her reaction. “Hey,” she said softly. “You okay?” It was the middle of the night, and he was the one asleep with the thing that had just turned his life upside down, but he was asking about her? She never came to him with needs. He came to her. She nodded. “I thought I’d take him so you could get more comfortable.” He looked down at the baby, and seemingly instinctively, his hand slid from the baby’s butt to his back. James’s hand was huge on the tiny baby, and Harper swallowed hard at the sweet picture. “He’s okay.” “You sure? I don’t mind.” He looked up at her. He was clearly still sleepy, maybe not fully awake. “You wanna help?” he asked. She nodded. “Yeah.” She felt terrible for leaving earlier. It had gone against every instinct except the one that screamed at her to protect her heart no matter the cost. But she was afraid she was far past the point of that being possible. “Then come here.” Harper wet her lips. “Come… there?” “Yeah.” He reached for her with his free hand and caught her around the wrist, tugging her forward. She could have easily pulled back, broken free, resisted. But she let him urge her onto the mattress. Harper knelt with a knee next to his hip. “How does this help?” “Gets you up against me,” he said, his voice still sleep roughened. Her heart skittered. “That’s helpful?” “Can’t imagine how it will hurt.” He gave her a sleepy, but still devastatingly sexy smile. “This way you’re here if he does need something.” Well, he had a point. Harper stretched out on the mattress beside James. He put his arm up above his head again, not holding her, but definitely exposing plenty of surface area for her to be up against. Oh, what the hell. She wouldn’t sleep well at her place now, wondering what was going on over here. This way she was very much here for whatever went on. And she’d wanted to be up against him for a few months now. Lord only knew what the next few days were going to bring with the baby and everything. She might as well enjoy this moment while she had it. She scooted closer. His body was hot and hard. She swallowed with some difficulty. Then the baby made a little grunting sound and curled and stretched against James. This was so not how she’d ever pictured being in bed with James Reynaud. That was for sure.

James takes care of things. As a firefighter, he will run into a burning building to help and whenever someone is in need, he is there to lend a hand. When items show up on his doorstep, he takes them in but when Harper moves in across the hall, he starts asking her to help. Suddenly, this unlikely duo is co-parenting an olive tree, lizard and a dog. This for me is the best foreplay ever and James is playing the long game to win over Harper. Harper likes her organized and orderly world. When James knocks the first time, the professor asks him to write a paper on how to take care of an olive tree thinking this would discourage him but no, he stepped up and delivered what she requested. Harper gets to see the incredible heart that James has to help others but she doesn’t think she has the same ability. When a baby ends up on James’ doorstep, they both are challenged, Harper feeling jealous of whoever the mother is and James trying to get Harper to realize that they can be a family. They are an inspiration in how they approach their lives and open their hearts and doors to help. I was swept away into their journey. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
